Beat Kidney Disease

This can be one of the most difficult times in your life. When you go to the doctor and have your regular checkup and find that you have issues with your kidney function. In the beginning it may not seem as something you should really stress over but once more tests are done then reality sets in and you finall realize how severe thise problem is. Its a fact that 1 out of every 9 people have chronice kidney disease and many do not even notice any signs until the disease has progressed.

I feel that kidney disease is one of he mos scariest diseases out there. It has 5 stages of progression and for the most part you do not even feel most of the symptoms until it is too late and you need dialysis. I am a very young individual and never felt that getting regular checkups was really necessary. I felt great and excercised on a regular basis. I even ate all the right foods and steered clear of junk foods and fast food.

One day I was driving to the store and as I got on the highway I was pulled over by a state trooper over my brake light not functioning right. After I gave him my license and insurance information he came back to inform me that I had a warrant for my arrest. This was news to me since I never get in trouble. I was taken to the jail and found out that it was a mistake and it was for someone that had the exact same name as me.

Before they informed me that they had the wrong person I was going through initial intake and a nurse took my blood pressure. They informed me that it was dangerousl high and I really need to get it checked as soon as possible. Since the warrant issue was cleared up I then went straight over to the hospital and they informed me that I have abnormal high blood pressure and my kidneys were performing at 35%.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    Could I have kidney disease/failure?
I was looking up kidney disease symptoms and a lot of mine match (although I realize they may be somewhat vague symptoms possibly caused by other things.) I was wondering if anyone could help me out with what they think i might have. They are as follows:

-extremely itchy and sensitive rash on chest and face for at least a week (cortisone cream had been only mildly helpful, if it all)
-more frequent, stronger urges to go to the bathroom and yet i barely urinate at all once there (i thought it was a yeast infection but has not gone away with 1 a day pills to help such and there is no itch)
-feeling of bloating or tightness in lower abdomen for at least 3-4 days that I thought was maybe constipation but has not passed with laxatives
-as of tonight, I have a strong pain in my lower left side also reaching somewhat to my lower left back
-lately i’ve felt like i have to breath deeper and my heart feels like it’s beating extra fast or intensely
-i have had chills as long as i can remember…they usually show up in quick spasms (also getting chills when i use the bathroom and nothing comes out)
-i have not worked out in a couple days, but when i did last week a couple times, i felt disoriented (almost couldn’t see straight) and overwhelmingly tired after cardio but have not been sore the next day

As a note I also had pyelonephritis when i was 3 and am now 20. I am looking for more constructive help than ‘go see a doctor’ because that is an obvious observation.
This is in response to Irving-
I try to drink 64 oz of water a day so I’m not sure how to hydrate more, but I will definitely cut back on caffeine. I drink 1-2 cups of coffee a day so despite the withdrawal I will try it. I took a generic antacid earlier tonight (which I think is what tums is?) and it did not change a thing. Would something like pamprin help since it’s for bloating and stuff or should I just steer clear of more meds?

  2. QUESTION:
How do I file for disability with social security?
I have kidney disease, and have exhausted all of my savings. I can no longer pay for any of my Dr. visits. Also I haven’t been able to work for over four years. I am NOT a dead beat I’ve paid for everything out of pocket till now. Thank you for your help.

    • ANSWER:
I am assuming you are not on dialysis yet. Once you are on dialysis or need a transplant, you will automatically qualify for disability and also get Medicare; the Medicare will start 3 months after your dialysis starts.. Just something to keep in mind.

  3. QUESTION:
Can eating bananas trigger Kidney problems?
I’m a 34 year old female who has a family history of Kidney Disease. The members of my family that had Kidney Disease also abused drugs and alcohol, so who’s to say if the drugs and alcohol caused their Kidney Disease. I have never used or tried drugs or alcohol and yet I’ve suffered chronic kidney infections for years, especially after having children. Now yesterday I ate a banana and started to have back pain (kidney area), and my urine had a very foul salty kind of odor, my blood pressure seemed high and my heart was beating really fast. I do know that if you have Kidney Disease, your diet cannot contain potassium because the kidneys cannot filter properly therefore causing the same symptoms I just explained. I ate another banana today just to see if the same thing happened, and it did. Should I bring this to the attention of my physician? Should I worry? Has anyone else experienced any such thing, or similiar to what I have explained?
Do you think my kidneys are showing signs of failure? I didn’t have these symptoms in the past, but because of my family history of Renal Failure I was wondering if this could be the beginning.

    • ANSWER:
You should definitely bring this to the attention of your doctor. Potassium, sodium, calcium, phosphorus and other minerals are critical for the proper function of your kidneys and their ability to keep the water balance of your blood, as well as their ability to remove toxins. If you have kidney problems and you eat too much of any of these substances, you can can cause permanent damage to your body. A high level of potassium in the blood can lead to heart rhythm problems, and if left untreated can even lead to death. Please see your doctor ASAP and educate yourself on the proper diet for your body! Good luck!

  4. QUESTION:
Sudden rise in blood pressure and pulse?
Lately, I have experienced these relatively brief episodes of very high blood pressure and rapid pulse, accompanied by constricted blood vessels, that last anywhere from 15 minutes to 1 hour. They come about suddenly, even when I’m totally relaxed, and have caused by blood pressure to jump as high as 180/90 with a pulse as high as 115 beats per minute. I saw a cardiologist who gave me a 24 hour EKG and told me everything looked fine, even though I have palpitations and a relatively high pulse (around 90 bpm) most of the time. He said that it’s most likely due to my anxiety disorder, but like I said, these episodes happen even when I’m relaxed…even after taking my Klonopin (an anti-anxiety med)! I’m sure my anxiety fuels these episodes once they take place, but it certainly doesn’t cause them. And popping a “chill pill” never halts these episodes. By the way, I have high cortisol levels, am pre-hypertensive, and have a family history of kidney disease. I am a 21 year old male.

    • ANSWER:
Hello! A BIG part of your problem is the cortisol level, also called the “stress hormone”. High levels will raise blood pressure and pulse. Family history does not help. It’ll get you most of the time. Taking the “chill pill” as soon as you feel the palpitations come on will not help because it takes time for the pill to work. By the time it does work, the heart episode is over. Keep you pressure under control. Better to be on the low side rather than high. Persistent, untreated high blood pressure will eventually damage organs, especially heart and kidneys. With your family history of kidney disease, you should be extra careful. Also, if you are African-American, your risk of heart disease, diabetes and kidney problems is significantly higher.
Take care of yourself. I hope this helps.

  5. QUESTION:
    How are pugs?
The family basset hound had to be put down recently due to kidney failure. He had addisons disease and all the medication took a beating on him. We are now looking at pugs. How are they are they prown to many diseases. Godd tempermant? We want something a little more up beat and active.

    • ANSWER:
They are prone to quite a few health problems, but they have really good temperaments. The only down side of the breed is that they shed every day of their lives.

  6. QUESTION:
    Kidneys….?
I go back to the kidney disease & hypertension doctor on Thursday, but darn, these past two days the front, sides and back around the kidney area have become quite swollen and beat red. Sort of hurts to walk and move around, almost like there is a shifting weight rotating around that area. Anyone know what could be causing this? I mean, I just started going to this guy, so im basically clueless as to whats going on becuase he just started taking tests, without any kind of diagnoses yet. Hopefully Ill find that out on Thursday.

Also, does anyone know what the possible reason was for him taking a 24 hour urine sample from me, and 7 viles of blood? What exactly does that test for?

Also, why is he always look at my finger tips and my ankles, im sure its to look for swelling, but every time, thats one of the first things he checks.
Xray and Ultrasound. Said nothing seemed out of the ordinary incept for they were somewhat enlarged.

    • ANSWER:
maybe a kidney infection or stones
      did they xray ?

  7. QUESTION:
Lymes disease? what is wrong with me?
Ok so I have had lots of test with a GI doctor, including CAT scan, lower endoscopy, etc.
I have had these symptoms for about 3 1/2 months. 1. Belt of heavy achy pain across my abdomin, especially the lower right side. 2. Lower back pain. 3. Very fast heart beat. 4. Dizziness, lightheadedness. 5. General fatigue. 6 And minor headaches and chest pain.. The only thing that has been established in the medicial community is that I tested positive for Lyme’s disease. But I had lymes when I was 5, and im not sure but doesn’t a lymes test (western blot) always show up positive if you have had it before???. The other finding is that I have had many urine tests and all of them have a very high protein content. Im seeing a kidney doctor in a few weeks, but do be honest, I have doubts as to whether a doctor really cares, so I figured why not try and see if anyone has any experience with this, anything similar at all. Thanks … Oh other information Im a male 20yr 135lbs, no drinking or smoking, no other known diseases, 100mg of zoloft a day (OCD). Thanks

  9. QUESTION:
    Medical question – Kidneys?
I recently found out that my mom’s side of the family has kidney disease and diabetes, and it tends to show up in almost everyone related to my mom’s mom/my grandmother (she has stage 4 kidney disease). I am 28, I have gout – severe at times -, and have recently started to do smoothies in the morning with a multitude of berries, apples, strawberries, and only 1 banana between 3 people. I never was much in to potassium, however, I read that potassium is in many foods, so making a low potassium diet is quite difficult. About the 3rd or 4th day of smoothies I began to urinate quite frequently and am having kidney pains. Also, in the last few months, I have had muscle cramps, knee pain that lasted 3 weeks, and heart beat issues. I was worked up exactly a year ago and everything came back normal except the uric acid. Gout is an indicator of kidney functionality, my family has a history, and potassium increase began urination and pain. Am I being a hypochondriac or is it worth the Emergency room visit to get my potassium levels checked out while I am having the issue?
My grandmother can have no potassium.
I drink a lot of water, almost no coke/pepsi/corn syrup (use maple syrup), only chicken, ground turkey, soy products and some pork, veggies, etc… over all healthy diet.

    • ANSWER:
Don’t go to the A&E. Go to your GP.

It sounds like you have your diet well controlled and I think that that’s the key to kidney disease. So I think that although you probably will develop kidney disease in the end, you shouldn’t be too worried at the minute.

      Good luck.

  10. QUESTION:
Kidney and heart problems due to untreated strep?
I went to doctor today and they said i had >300mg of protein in my urine..so this means i would have a kidney problem..and also i have an abnormal heart beat. And when i was little i had alot of strep throat gone untreated..could this all tie together? What could be my diagnoses…as in what diseases could this have caused my heart and kidneys?
i also had scarlet fever as a baby
well i am getting test done in a few days to furthur examine why i am having these problems but i was just asking in case some one had some similarity or any ideas.

    • ANSWER:
Can strep throat lead to a heart murmur? Yes, but it’s not super common. Untreated strep can develop into rheumatic fever – which can cause aortic valve (or any of the 4 valves) damage in a way that I don’t care to explain right now. The deformed/damaged valve causes the murmur.

As for the protein in your urine…that’s a very non-specific finding which means without further examination, history and testing, there’s no answer to your question. Strip infections uncommonly cause acute kidney damage, but it typically doesn’t continue as a chronic problem. A few common causes of protein in the urine:

      1. Recent strenuous exercise
      2. Pregnancy
      3. Chronic uncontrolled hypertension (high blood pressure)
      4. Diabetes
*both #3 and 4 often cause renal insufficiency – which in turn can cause spillage of protein into the urine and other urine abnormalities.

You need to seek medical attention for definitive answers to your questions unless your provider has already told you that he/she is not concerned about your proteinuria (protein in the urine).

  11. QUESTION:
    Want to become anorexic?
You might wanna read this first (it’s an answer from someone else to another question, and it describes the results of anorexia):

    Constipation
    Bloating
    Dark circles under your eyes
    Brittle bones, easy fractures
Hair growth all over your entire body
    Brittle nails
    Brittle hair
Hair thinning and loss (the hair on your head–it falls out)
    Dull hair
    Dull skin
    Dull eyes
    Sunken eyes
    Stomach pain
    Hunger pain
    Weakness
    Osteoporosis
    Lethargy
Really long time to digest food
Abnormal muscle activity in the esophagus
Poor coordination (you’ll be highly entertaining to watch on the dance floor)
Circus-act appeal (everyone will stare/whisper about your bones sticking out)
Muscle loss (you’ll lose your muscle and your only tissues will be fat and skin)
Irritable (think of PMS-ing all the time!)
    Frequent respiratory infections
    Potential blindness
    Sleep Disorders
Decreased brain function (Ignorance is bliss right?? ummm, what’s ‘Ignorance’ mean??)
    Memory loss
    Depression
    Anxiety
    Enlarged salivary glands
    Low blood sugar levels
    Low body temperature
    Kidney stones due to dehydration
    Rough scaly skin
    Psychotic episodes
    Mood swings
    Decreased sex drive
    Menstruation cessation
Infertility (you didn’t want kids right??)
Higher risk of birth defect in offspring (lower birth weight, increased incidence of premature birth)
    Higher risk of miscarriage
Impaired insulin response (disturbances in amino acid uptake)
    Severe heart muscle atrophy
    Irregular heart beat
    Fatal heart arrhythmias
    Heart attack
    Cerebral swelling
    Seizures
    Coma
    Suicide
    Death

Kidney disease and all it’s lovely symptoms:
    1. Burning or difficulty during urination
    2. An increase in the frequency of urination
    3. Passage of blood in the urine
    4. Puffiness around the eyes, swelling of the hands and feet
    5. Pain in the small of the back just below the ribs
    6. High blood pressure

Mmmmmm, sounds yummy doesn’t it? I’d bet these symptoms would drive all the boys mad (and they’d run away from you for sure!)
So my question (has to be a question to meet Yahoo guidelines) is basically do you want to become anorexic? And if so, WHY? Does the above sound appealing?
star: simply not true. The instant you have an eating disorder, you have lost control.

Others: I know eating disorders are complex, but I figured this might at least prevent someone starting if they were considering it.
Also star, there is a difference between dieting and being anorexic. A diet is a controlled way of losing weight because a person is actually overweight. Anorexia is an extreme thing that controls you, where the loss of weight reaches dangerous levels. There are sadly a lot of anorexic people – but many many more people who are not.

Also someone can understand something without going through it. I have never been raped, but I have empathised with, and understood, people who have talked to me who HAVE been raped.

The above things (or at least some of them) happen pretty quickly once anorexia starts – everyone except anorexics can see that

    • ANSWER:
Good on ya for putting this up here. Hopefully will scare people into sense.

  12. QUESTION:
Quite a few symptoms…do they all link up to one thing?
Ok…first off lets start off with this…I am 23 have 2 children and have never had any health problems (that I knew of) until October of 2008. I went to the er with terrible pain and vomiting, turned out I had a UTI…took the antibiotics and went to see my doctor to make sure it went away and it turned into a kidney infection and was ordered a CT scan…which turned out I had kidney stones in my right kidney. I guess I passes it…because for a little while I had no pain…well actually I had excruciating pain for about 20 minutes and then my back no longer hurt. But then a month later…back at the er with a kidney infection. Every month since October of 2008 I have had a kidney infection and some months 2. I have been given Cipro, Bactrim, Lavaquin, Amoxicilian…and none of them ever got rid of the kidney infection. In the past few months, I have noticed extreme fatigue, I can fall asleep just sitting here typing and I will have done nothing tiring that day (yes I am a mom but this is not the normal tiredness) I am always nauseated and vomit at least once a week. I have a rash all over my body that will not go away, it itches to the point that I make myself bleed. At night, this past week I have been experiencing difficulty breathing, fast heart beat and paralyzation of my body for a moment before I can finally move and am able to breath. Some mornings I wake up and from my waist down to my feet I have the most eexcruciatingpain that its miserable to get up and get to my son. I also only have one partner, when we do have sex, when we normally don’t because it is normally very painful…our sheets end up covered in blood (while I am not menstruating). I had an ultrasound done today for my pelvis and kidneys and see the DR in the morning, I just don’t feel right. My body feels like its falling apart. Has anyone else had these experiences, if so…what was it…I know I see the dr in the morning but after 10 months of this…I am just getting scared and the pain and nausea getting worse. Does this sound like kidney disease?? Any info would be great.
If it helps any, I was 16 when I gave birth to my first child and had complications with both children. Took nearly a year to get pregnant with my second child.

Executive says that your outstanding is Rs.270000 not possible in short payment.
Now they required full amount immediately and threatening me and my family members that we shall catch you & beat you up or get punished by police or in the court of law & they misbehaved with my family members in my house. In this regard i already contacted to customer care on phone but no response. one employee of bank Mr. gaurav from chandigarh office threatened now & then & says that more than 3 lacs still due on your head , we already paid all installments upto April 2009.

  14. QUESTION:
Is this grounds for an EEOC complaint, or ADA lawsuit?
My girlfriend had been working for an engineering firm for about 2 years. About 6 months after she went to work there she was diagnosed with kidney disease and had to go on dialysis and. While on dialysis her employer allowed her to go on part-time status working only 24 hours per week. After 8 months on dialysis she recieved a kidney transplant and was out of work on long term disability for six months. Her boss knew she was on the transplant list and would be out six months after the surgery and indicated he was ok with this.

She returned to work full-time exactly six months following the transplant. About three months later she developed complications and became ill while on a business trip and had to cancel the remainder of the trip and return home to see his doctor. She had to to be hospitalized several days for testing and a procedure to remove a kidney stone and insert a stent. The day after she returned to work following this hospitalization her boss called her into the office and told him her she was being “laid off due to lack of work”.

This is a large multi-national firm with hundreds of employees and the company is doing VERY WELL having recently been awarded Federal contracts worth nearly half a billion dollars. The company kept two other less experienced employees in her office who did basicly the same job. One of these employees was a new hire right out of college with NO EXPERIENCE who had just started work there a month before my girlfriend was laid off. At the time my she was laid off the company had an opening for a position with a job description IDENTICAL to my girlfriend’s job posted on their corporate website. If she was laid off due to lack of work why were they advertising for new employees?
They were also in the process of moving to a larger office because her boss said they were planning to expand the staff in that office and needed more space. I am pretty sure my girlfriend was targeted for layoff due to her medical problems because she was the only person in that office who was laid off and she was much more experienced and had been with the company longer than the two other employees in the same position that they kept.

After she was laid off she contacted someone in HR to ask questions about benefits and this person apparently slipped up and told her that she was not let go due to “lack of work” as she was told but because of the quality of her work. She has had good performance reviews ever since she has been with the firm so she is not sure why they would say this. She contacted the regional manager (her boss’s boss) to clarify why he was laid off and these other less experienced employees were kept and they beat around the bush and told her that her education and job skills did not match up with the current work load they had, etc., etc. This is total BS because the other employees they kept have the EXACT SAME job description and she worked together with them on projects. When she pointed this out they they got very defenseive and a company attorney who was also in on the conversation told her they are an “at will employer” and added that “since Virginia is a right to work state they can legally terminate any employee at any time, for for any reason and don’t even have to give a reason.” Is this really true, I can’t believe this is legal?

Fortunately, my girlfriend managed to get on disability due to her health problems but it only pays her about 1/7 of what she was earning as an engineer. She has a printout of the job posting that they had online the day she was laid off and also a bunch of newsletters and emails sent out by he CEO that document the financial status of the company as well as the new contracts they had just been awarded. Should she file a charge of discrimination with the EEOC since she still has several weeks before the deadline to file? Does she have grounds for an ADA lawsuit against this company?

    • ANSWER:
She very possibly has a case. She needs to consult an attorney right away. It’s true that, in a right-to-work state, an employee can be terminated for no reason, but the circumstances surrounding the termination could cause legal issues.

  15. QUESTION:
    Pregnant..Should I be concerned?
I am 28 weeks pregnant, and have been having some symptoms I am worried about, but the doctors seem to blow them off as “normal”

My feet are currently so swollen I can’t put shoes on and it’s hard to walk…The skin is shiny and tight and stings from the pressure of the swelling… The best way I can describe what my feet look like would be to compare them to that of a Cabbage Patch Kid…Puffy and dimply. I have also been swelling in my legs, hands and face, but not as severely. My blood pressure has been fine my last 3 check-ups.

Second symptom: Horrible horrible “cramps” in my legs/feet. I know that some leg cramps are normal during pregnancy, but the other night I had the cramp of all cramps. From my hips down to my toes, it felt as if every single muscle hardened like a rock…the pain was excruciating, and lasted for 3 hours straight without ceasing. The muscles in my legs and feet were so rigid that I couldn’t move them, and the whole time they were involuntarily bending and contorting in ways I didn’t know were possible. The bad muscle spasms have occurred off and on for a few months, but never like this…

The third symptom is heart palpitations… My heart will skip beats, beat harder on some beats, mimic a fluttering or jumping sensation…It seems to happen randomly…no pattern of physical exertion or stress… I will also occasionally feel dizzy or faint and have been very tired.

I should also mention I have preexisting type 2 diabetes and mild kidney disease…

    • ANSWER:
The first 2 symptoms are normal for pregnancy, but your heart palpitations need to be watched carefully. Insist on seeing a doctor about it, and don’t take no for an answer.

  16. QUESTION:
What causes a person to have low magnesium levels(other than diet)?
I am 27 weeks pregnant. A couple of weeks ago, I told my OBGYN about some symptoms/problems that I’d been experiencing (shortness of breath, heart palpitations, rapid heart beat, and cramping). He referred me to a cardiologist. The cardiologist did a blood analysis, and an EKG and ultrasound of my heart then sent me home with a heart monitor (which I wore for 24 hours). I was told that, other than seeing the murmur that I knew about, he didn’t see anything alarming.

The next day, I received a phone call that my potassium and magnesium levels were dangerously low. He said that magnesium levels being that low would typically cause symptoms similar to the ones that I am having (irregular heart rates, insomnia, chronic fatigue, shortness of breath, etc.). He also said that it was probably just a dietary issue and prescribed supplements for both (400 mg of magnesium 2x a day and 250 mg of potassium once a day), which I was told to take for two weeks then come in for a follow up.

I had a follow up appointment yesterday. My cardiologist told me that the heart monitor didn’t reveal anything that he considered to be life threatening to either the baby or myself. He did see some ‘extra beats’ and rapid heart rate at times but nothing that he felt required immediate attention. He said that, normally, he would do a chest x-ray but he wanted to avoid it because of the pregnancy. So, he set an appointment for April 15th (a month after my due date) for me to come back and see him. Then, he sent me down to the lab to have some more blood drawn.

Last night around 7pm, I got a call on my cell phone that I didn’t recognize. I don’t normally answer calls from numbers that I don’t know but, when they turned around and immediately called back, I made an exception. It was my cardiologist. He said that the supplements hadn’t helped and that my magnesium levels hadn’t come up at all (they are still at a dangerously low level even after two weeks of taking 800 mg a day). He said that it is likely that it is not a dietary issue. He is concerned that I have a magnesium deficiency and that I am either unable to absorb it or I’m excreting it. He said that, he felt, this problem has been present for quite some time and is only just now being recognized and that, right now, his main concern is getting me through this pregnancy safely. And that, obviously, now we need to focus on trying to figure out the source of the problem. I’m scheduled to come back in a week from now for more blood work and he raised the dosage to 1200 mg a day.

I’ve driven myself crazy obsessing over the ‘potential causes’ of this problem and have found a number of articles about it on the Internet (thanks to google). Of course, the first is dietary but since we’ve pretty much ruled that out I have to move on to others. Diabetes, Hyperglycemia, Heart and/or kidney disease, toxemia, the list goes on and on. So, as you can imagine, I’ve worked myself into a frenzy. I also learned, from the internet, that drinking coffee and tea can cause you to excrete magnesium… so I have completely cut my morning coffee out (which was the only remedy I had to the chronic fatigue).

This is my 2nd day off of work (which I cannot afford… especially with Christmas around the corner). The chronic fatigue has been growing worse and, last Monday, I had to take a break (which turned into almost 2 hrs) just to take a nap in the car. One of the side effects of having low magnesium during pregnancy is pre-term labor. Well, ever since Sunday, I’ve been cramping every day (last night from midnight until early this morning). Any ideas about what could be causing this? Obviously, I am doing everything I can (making apts and keeping them) but if there is anyone out there who has had experience with magnesium deficiencies (during pregnancy or otherwise) I’d like to know what caused it for you and how you remedied it. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
Your symptoms seem to be very similar to mine. I am 23 weeks pregnant due April 9. I was having headaches, dizziness and tiredness. I also feel that at times my heart is racing. I did the bloodwork and also had the low potassium and magnesium. I went to a nephrologist who said it was Gitelman’s Syndrome – some sort of kidney disorder.

I have also been prescribed oral Potassium and Magnesium. I also have had IV infusions. My magnesium level stays around 0.9 and my potassium fluctuates between 2.4-3.0 but seems to always stay around 2.6.

What are your blood levels? Also did u see anyone other than the cardiologist

Id really like to hear back from you because it seems like you are going through the same situation as me and Im really frustrated
Ive had my arms poked so many times that Im bruised all over

  17. QUESTION:
What could this sharp pain indicate? So many symptoms and little answers…?
I’ve been experiencing this sharp pain on the left side of my body, mainly lower left abdomen and the pain radiates to the left rib area and left back (somewhere at the waist and hips). The pain is considerably more noticeable when I lie down on my left side…so to relieve the pain I simply turn to my right.

However, the pain has become more prominent over several months (initually, it wasn’t as painful and it didn’t really bother me) and now, even when I lie on my right side, the pain subsides only slightly and it is still there.

I know I could only ask a doctor, but I am looking for possibilities since I’m currently spending a fortune on some other health prob I have that’s still being diagnosed.

What I’m most afraid of is abdominal aneurism. Although I don’t have a family history of it I’ve read it can kill instantly and not many make it to the hospital alive once it bursts.

Could it be appendicitis? Pneumonia? Digestive problems? Kidney disease??? What is the most likely scenario here? i don’t know where to start and I’m really stressing right now.

BTW I’m 25, 107 lbs. I’ve been exercising alot regularly for 5 months but recently stopped due to chest pain, palpitations and half my body went numb for a whole day. I just had my 2D echo results back and it says ‘normal’, even though my cardiologist did an ECG before that and it indicated I had irregular heart beat and an enlarged heart.

I have no idea what to do at this point. I’m seeing my cardiologist tomorrow to show him the 2d Echo results. I don’t know whether I have a heart prob or if I will be referred to a different medical specialist and going around in circles…what can I do to have a clear diagnosis? i’ve been having all these strange symptoms and suffering from them for several months…pls help….

  18. QUESTION:
What’s up with the distant girlfriend?
    This is long:

My girlfriend of a year and I just got back from a great weekend of meeting my family and friends in my homestate 2 weeks ago. We’ve actually been doing the long distance thing for a few months (had to move out of state for different job) and she plans on moving here this summer. I actually moved most her stuff with me when I moved (kitchen table, bedroom set, clothes, family valuables, etc…).
Lately she’s been acting differently and with my past experiences, I thought maybe there’s someone else. Conveniently enough, we set our selves up on the same phone plan in my new state. I noticed on the new phone bill there’s a new number that comes up sometimes quite often. Mostly texts. Maybe a few calls a day going both ways, maybe 30-60 min in a day total. This person will text her at anytime, middle of the night, early morning, doesn’t matter so I assume it’s a guy. They usually text her when she’s sleeping and she responds first thing in the morning. I’m used to her saying good morning to me but I dont’ get those texts, calls recently. She’ll usually tell me she’s gonna call me in the morning then says she forgot when she doesn’t till’ later on.
I’ve confronted her on some things, some trying to beat around the bush about someone else. I’ve asked if she’s interested in someone else, if she wants to see other people, wants to break up and she says “no” to all of these. She says she wants to be with me, wants to move here, and misses and loves me. She says it’s not just one thing going on in her life but a number of things getting to her. She DOES contact me throughout the day, sometimes quite a bit, just not in our usual routine you know?
What she has told me is she’s confused about what she wants to do with her life, has been through alot at her age (24), isn’t happy with her life lately and has been stressed out. Her mom is really sick, her mom is being sued by a family member, my girlfriend has kidney disease and has recently had issues with that, and to top it off, she’s been going through a divorce longer than we’ve been together. (Didn’t live with the guy until they got married, went downhill shortly after). The divorce has always been hard on her because it’s basically holding up on us continuing. She can’t really leave the state until it’s done. She says she’s going to see a life coach next week to help sort things out.
I’m confused by all of this. She IS being distant and there IS alot going on in her life. Yet last night she was telling me how she wishes she was here and wants to come out here after her next court date in a few weeks. She’s a smart, straightforward person and not afraid to speak her mind. I find it hard to believe that I couldn’t get all the facts from her. She’s always been completely faithful to me and has always had a strong opinion against people who cheat in relationships. It’s just strange to go from last week having my hometown friends tell me about the conversations she had with them and how happy and fortunate she is to have met me and asking when my mom is going to visit her, to distancing herself. We’ve been very happy together and stayed strong even with me moving, so this has been tough. I’ve been thinking the best thing to do is to not contact her at all but to leave that up to her. What do you think of all of this?

    • ANSWER:
The first thing I would do is ask her who it is that keeps calling and texting her, but be nice about it, at this point it could be any one. Tell her how you are feeling and what your fears are. It sounds like she has been through a lot, and if the two of you are as close as you think you are she is probably looking at you as the one thing in her life she doesn’t have to worry about. It sounds like you are her rock, and she needs you. Tell her that she is not going through these things alone, and that you want to help her, even if it is only as a shoulder to cry on. She may not be aware of the fact she is pulling away from you. Just remember that while she deserves your honesty and support, you deserved the same from her. Talk to her about these things. Let her read what you have said to us. It will help the both of you.

  19. QUESTION:
Do i have low blood pressure, and what caused it?!?
in summer time in august and half of september i went on a diet of 800 calories a day because i wanted to loose weight i weighed 100lb and im 18 only 4’10 in height.. {NOTE: i have Kidney disease kidneys only working 30%, also high blood pressure) and i started feeling sick so in October i started eating again like last week… and felt sick and didnt feel like eating and kept feeling nauseas looking at food kept getting headaches but after eating it felt bettter. Now i got my blood pressure checked and it was 98/63 which is REALLY low as im used to having high blood pressure and all of a sudden its so low.. and making me feel tired, heart beating faster, sinking feeling, feels better after eating but ends up feeling the same after a while and naseas and dizzy etc..
BTW i used to take high blood pressure medicine and since i kept feeling like i was going to pass out adn stopped it now becasue of such low blood pressure.
So did not eating enough cause low BP all of a sudden?
also if i don’t eat for a while my body’s stomaches and waist and ribs muscles start feeling suffocated when i breathe and then i eat something and it feels better, why is this happening?
and im eating normal now but still no matter how much i eat i still feel and tired and nauseas and get low blood pressure.

    • ANSWER:
98/63 is absolutely excellent. Although 120/80 is regarded as normal, lower down to 90/60 is much better than higher up to 140/90.

If you drop below 90/60 then it is getting a bit low and you may need treatment but 98/63 is absolutely excellent. That is the sort of blood pressure that superfit athletes have.

  20. QUESTION:
    Gallbladder Disease or Stones?
Here’s the quick version of my story! :)

For the past 14 months I have had 5 “attacks.” I call these attacks, because I am not in pain on a regular basis. I have gotten woke up out of the blue, in the middle of the night (only once did it happen during the day) with SEVERE pain in my stomach/front. It’s it a peircing pain, that seems to start up high, and just flood my complete front – side to side, top to bottom. Nothing makes the pain go away. It always goes away in about an hour. Most times I end up sick in the bathroom with diarrehea/vomiting/sweaty/hot. The next day I feel like someone beat me up in the stomach and bruised me up. Also I feel like I can’t hold in my stomach!
After attack #2, I went to our local Urgent Care the next day, they said they thought it was the onset of diverticulitis and saw the constipation in a xray. After attack 3 or 4 I realized I was most always menustrating at the times of these attacks. So, off to my gyno I go to see if it’s related.
It’s not – but they did find an ovarian cyst we’ll be taking care of – surprise! So my gyno sent me to get an Ultrasound of my Gallbladder, Liver, Pancreas, and right Kidney. I got that today, and will have my results in a few days. When the Ultrasound tech pushed right where my ribcage connects, kind of pushing up and underneath, from the middle towards my right, it hurt! She asked me if there was pain in that spot, and seemed to spend some time there in a small area.

When she checked under my right side ribcage, no pain – or my right side towards my hip – no pain. But that spot right where my ribcage connects, felt like someone was pushing on a giant bruise! It’s kind of sore now after getting pushed on so hard. I don’t have pain there on a regular basis, only when she was doing that ultrasound.

Could this be the sign of a bad gallbladder or stones? Is this where the gallbladder is located? Tell me your story. Thanks in advance!

see a doctor since it sounds like more than just stones.

to dead animals, I will bust non-fiction
For example 25 gallons of H20 makes a pound of wheat, but did you know it takes
100 times that much to make a pound of beef, so from our water shortage we get no relief
when over half of the water goes to produce meat and cattle eat up all the grain that we could eat.
But we don’t ’cause we won’t understand the demand to make better use of our food and our land.
90% of our corn and oats feed livestock that’s why I hope that you’re listening.
yeah I said I wouldn’t preach, well I lied. Alright who cares what you eat.
I just want you to know while you’re getting fat on your burgers, I’m gonna go get the gat.

I’m gonna get the gat because it makes a lot of sense, it’s not a personal thing

You’ll be dying much slower from colon cancer, but hey that’s your decision.
    I’ll wait for your answer.
Oops, sorry times up, take that,
between cancer and a gun I’ll take the gat.
It’s not only quicker it’s less expensive
the cost of chemotherapy is most extensive

Cancers not the only choice if you please, you can have liver kidney and heart disease
Ulcers, constipation, salmonellosis, hypoglycemia, multiple sclerosis
yes these diseases are funky and fresh
and all can be yours when you eat dead flesh
Rolling rolling rolling, tumors in your colon, blood pressure is growing RAW HIDE
and just think of the homies who’ve died
so as a courtesy to you and for your own protection
and before your body’s riddled with mass infection and
before you die of causes that you think are natural G,
I’m gonna go get the gat.

Yeah I hear you, I’ve heard it all before
“You can’t tell me what to buy in the store
I’m sick of you bitching about what’s in my kitchen
I find that liberal bullshit your picking.”
Yo shut up, listen up you fuck up, I’m fed up,
Yeah, I used to eat meat, but I beat that deceit
And the the crap of the trap of the wrap of the food that’s not food
and I’ll be rude and crude cause that’s my mood
and my voice and my choice and my rhyme this time,
yeah I mind that you’re so damn blind
that your eating from the wrong link of the food chain
And I didn’t even mention yet about the pain
that the animals live in before they are given the bullet or the mallet
    to satisfy your pallet
but before it gets to you, there’s some things they do
like chemicals and dyes and nice happy lies
like “meat is part of the four food groups”
if you’ve study nutrition you know you’ve been dooped
you get better protein from soy beans
with a third of fat now what cha think about that
When you look at the vitamins and compare the price
you’re much better off eating beans and rice
but let me reiterate my own position
I’m a god damn drunk I don’t care about nutrition
so just think about what I have said
then make up your own mind in your head
and throw away your meat or give it your cat
    but if not that’s ok
I’m gonna go get the gat.
The whole gat thing is tongue in cheek – if you know of MDC and heard the song you’d understand it better – it’s amusing coz it’s done with a wry sense of humour – I do enjoy Dead Prez ‘Be Healthy’ I’m just keen to find out other folks faves!

  23. QUESTION:
What causes yellowing in the eyes, red blood vessels, tremors that move up and down your body?
I am wondering whether or not this could be caused by anything other than liver related issues and if so will it go away on its own?

I have high blood pressure, kidney stone disease, have back problems from rupturing my disk in lower vertebra twice. I do not tolerate anesthesia well. I have depression also. I have been told I most likely have endometriosis, I did not go in for the procedure to get the definite answer on that one. In April I had been admitted to the hospital for shaking/tremor episodes. I left the hospital because I became frightened when told of some tests they planned to do. Last year when I was hospitalized to undergo a surgery, they did a mri on my brain and found a large lipoma deep in my brain, they said it was rare but should not cause problems. It was deep in the center. This is a s much as I can say. The shaking/tremors went away after about a month. I have had moments where i forget all of a sudden how to do something or become extremely frightened and confused, just for a few minutes or secs usually. My eyes are slightly yellowed and the vessels are red.

I Also have very strong heartbeats I am feeling and they are sometimes kind of irregular beats. I also get bruises on my legs that take a long time to go away about or around the same time I get horrible muscle cramps in my legs. It has been a long time but I also got these charlie like cramps in my stomach before where my stomach visibly twisted. Also, occasional spot of tingling on the toungue and nnausea and fatiqgue with the tremors? I am telling you all of this additional info in case it may be related somehow. Please help me if you know the answers. Thanks in advance.

I do not have the means to go to repeated doctor visits and testing

    • ANSWER:
There are probably multiple health issues going on with you and only a doctor can put the pieces of the puzzle together and give you the proper diagnosis. And, yellowing of the sclera can mean something is going on with your liver and blood tests would be needed in order to find this out along with a physical exam. If you have no insurance, every community has a free clinic somewhere but you will need to search this out because they usually do not advertise, otherwise, they would be swamped with patients. Your local hospital can often direct you to where a free clinic exists. Go and get an exam and some blood tests done.

    • ANSWER:
Red blood vessels in the eyes, could be due to Hypertensive retinopathy.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypertensive_retinopathy

Yellowing of the eyes, symptoms of jaundice, liver.

      Tremors…
Could be due to… the lipoma in the brain, as you described, deep in the center.
That could suggest the pituitary gland, or hypophysis. It is an endocrine/hormonal gland.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pituitary_gland

This could affect the thyroid gland function.
The anterior pituitary synthesizes and secretes important endocrine hormones, such as ACTH, TSH, PRL, GH, endorphins, FSH, and LH.

TSH is the relevant one affected.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thyroid-stimulating_hormone#Diagnostic_use

Look at the table suggesting high TSH leveland thyroid hormone level suggesting benign tumor of the pituitary (adenoma).

High thyroid hormone levels is called Hyperthyroidism

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperthyroidism#Signs_and_symptoms

Hyperthyroidism could be the cause of the TREMORS and ARRHYTHMIA, & nausea.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arrhythmia

Cardiac dysrhythmia (also known as arrhythmia) is a term for any of a large and heterogeneous group of conditions in which there is abnormal electrical activity in the heart. The heart beat may be too fast or too slow, and may be regular or irregular.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi,

It’s impossible to give a good answer without doing a complete exam, but yellowing of the eyes is called jaundice, and most commonly indicates liver disease. Causes of red eyes? Wow, that’s a long list that could be considerably shortened by seeing them to look for clues…

The causes of bruising, leg cramps, heart palpitation, etc are also too many to list: you need to see a good primary care physician (MD) to sort the symptoms after a physical exam and blood tests, at a minimum, to ascertain cause.

However, some of the symptoms you describe are consistent with the health problems you already know about, so if you’re unwilling/unable to see a doctor, at the very least you should be controlling these conditions with whatever meds you’ve been prescribed.

Bottom line: you’re a more complicated case than most here, and if you’re concerned enough to seek free advice on Yahoo! (which is often worth what you’ve paid for it!), then you really need to be evaluated by a MD!

I’m an eye doc (OD), and if a patient I examined complained of these symptoms, I’d be writing a letter of referral, sending them back to see their primary care physician (i.e. there is no eye drop treatment for jaundice: you need medical control of liver disease as the treatment).

Since what you describe are more systemic health issues, if funds are tight, I’d say forego the eye exam and go straight to your primary care doc (MDs should know that yellow conjunctiveae as a sign of jaundice).

      Good luck!

  26. QUESTION:
What causes red blood vessels in the eyes, yellowing of the eyes, tremors that are throughout your body,?
and dull head pains that just hit you?

I do not have the means to go to repeated doctor visits and testing
money for health is not an available option

This makes sense …. the Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals .not cold water. maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain…
For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.
It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal. However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.
Once this “sludge” reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

Of course the water will be sourced from good quality natural spring water. Remember your tap water is toxic, thanks to uncaring governments.

A serious note about heart attacks: Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting.

Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.

You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.

Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.

60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.

Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let’s be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive

I want to sort my medical issues out now, Can i just admit myself to hospital without any questions from the doctors? Or do i have to tell them whats happened?

    • ANSWER:
you wont have to tell them all the family problem details, but you will need to tell them anything medically relevant… ie anything you have done to yourself, how you have been taking care of your illnesses (or not taking care of them, as is the case)
you probably also want to explain about the depression, because they should know that, some medications make depression worse

  32. QUESTION:
I have a 20-year-old cat and this morning she had what appeared to be a seizure.?
I have a 20-year-old cat and this morning she had what appeared to be a seizure. She was flipping, turning her head, and her eyes were so wide. As soon as she was done I just held her and her little heart was beating so fast. I know she is losing her health as she was once plump and overweight and she is so skinny now. She has already been thru kidney and liver disease on separate occasions during her mid years. This time I know I won’t be during a whole course of treatment since she is 20 and her kitty time is coming to an end. My question is should I send her to the vet and have her undergo tests? I would like to keep her here and keep her comfy as she doesn’t seem to be suffering, she is acting like her normal self, but I can’t be entirely certain what is going on in the inside, on the other hand, even though she is 20, I still don’t want to rush to put her to sleep. Thanks!!
naps with cats: Thanks for the info! I had already checked her for dehydration :-) When she had kidney disease, she was sent home with IV and I did it for a week when she came home :-)

I’m going to keep a close eye on her and if it continues she will go to see the doc. Thanks so much!

    • ANSWER:
Please take her to a vet and remember, as hard as it is, if she is in pain-You have to do what is best for her!!! I know it’s hard!!!!!!!! When we lost our family dog after a freak thing and once we knew, he was suffering, my son and I didn’t take 2 minutes to say goodbye, but it took them over an hour to pry us screaming from him. We have his urn and some toys in a glass shelf. I would have sold EVERYTHING I own-if it would have made a difference..but, he was in pain and nothing could be done. We can’t even talk about him without crying..tears flood my eyes right now. We can’t shake him being gone. I hope she is able to have a few healthy more years, but do what is best for her.

  34. QUESTION:
Can antidepressants be the cause of my disturbing dreams (lots of details)?
    Hi Everyone,

I haven’t been here in a while. A lot has happened since then. My mom has passed from a massive heartattack, I lost my job (but I have another one now), I had my baby, but had to go back into the hospital for chest pains and edema (now i have a small nodule in my throat, high cholesterol and blood in my stools–going in next week for exams), and my husband and I were supposed to divorce, but he never showed up to the lawyer’s meeting. We are still together but he is severely mentally, verbally and emotionally abusive.

Needless to say with all of that I was put on Lexapro for two weeks. My insurance refused to pay for it, so they switched me to the generic form of Paxil on yesterday. Last night I had a horrible dream.

In the dream I was at a church convention and they were doing an altar call. As soon as the preacher finished praying a lady started screaming. She sounded like a cat in pain. She then arose and begin to go from person to person sniffing the side of their faces. The people she sniffed refused to acknowledge her. She went from row to row. In front of me was a lady holding my 2 month old baby. I continued to sit behind the woman and said in my mind “if this demon comes over here I am going to let her have it…” This demon woman went from person to person and said she was looking for one of those “telephone talkers.” I have no idea what that means!!! She finally got to the woman with my baby and I stood up and began to rebuke her in the name of Jesus…she in turn begin rebuking me in the name of Jesus. I could feel my face about to explode and it felt like flames were coming from my eyes. I jumped up out of my sleep and my heart was beating extremely fast and my eyes hurt.

Is it “Christian” to take antidepressants? I have vivid dreams and feel like I am losing my mind. I keep hearing old “Metallica”songs in my head and feel like I am gonna die.

Oh a few weeks ago I had a dream that I was running down the street and stopped. All of a sudden a dog came out of no where and jumped on my neck. I later had another dream about a woman slitting my throat. Now a I have a nodule on my thyroid!!!! My brother had dreamed a long time ago that I would be murdered by a man that cut my throat. He dreamed that my mom would die from a disease….she died from heart disease (resulting from kidney failure/high blood pressure).

I dreamed (before I was on antidepressants) that my brother was going to be murdered…the next week my mom died. My sister told me that when I was a baby my mom and dad would burn candles around me and “anoint” my head. My dad it was so “they” couldn’t get me. My dad was also involved in masonic stuff. Since we were little all my mom’s kids have had visions or nightmares, visitations from demons or struggled with some type of addiction.

All this is taking a toll on me. I am sooo confused! Am I losing my mind.

    • ANSWER:
The trouble with antidepressants is, if it’s so bad you need more than one, things tend to get worse instead of better! Please try the following before you join the trainload of addicts dealing with mounting pain and uncontrollable side effects:

Thyroid : Stop at your nutrition center or oriental grocery of pharmacy and get some kelp. Sprinkle it on salads, mix it in drinks, or just choke it down. The iodine in it will let your thyroid adjust itself and you’ll be amazed how everything else will change.

If your husband’s still around you can get into a new healthy lifestyle together, one step at a time.
Do one thing from this list every day, and also, every time you feel you need a pill, do one thing from this list First:

N = nutrition Snack healthy – no high fructose corn syrup! Fruits, nuts, veggies – raw is good.
E = exercise Walking is fine. You’ll think of something fun!
W = water Brains run on water. Be sure at least 2 qt/day goes down. Water! (flavored maybe)
S = sunlight At least 10 min. direct sunlight every day. Even when it’s hot!
T = temperance Avoid “known poisons” like (sorry!) caffeine, nicotine, alcohol… Don’t over-do.
A = fresh air Try sleeping next to an open window, especially by a tree. (Baby, too.)
R = rest 7 hours / night. Those 3 hours before midnight are twice as valuable.
T = trust Count blessings. Study scripture.

Bible doesn’t say, “Don’t take pills.” But it offers a lot of good advice about health, as well as comfort and assurance. “The Lord is on my side. I will not fear!” I doubt that you’ll need pills as things improve for you.

    • ANSWER:
its all in your head kid….maybe you should start taking something for your anxiety just make sure the doc knows about your kidney problem. the medicine would have to be filtered through your liver. also dont take any i.b. prophen because that is filtered through your kidneys only take acephetomine for your aches/pains/fever/whatever btw EKG and ECG are the same exact test its an echocardiogram some people just use diff initials for it. your heart is fine.

    Inflamed, swollen, painful Joints?
I have Crohn’s disease and have always had joint problems. But mostly in the past it has been due to low pottassium levels. My knees have been real bad lately. All my joints but mostly my knees. I went into the hospital yesterday and the doctor says my pottassium levels are fine. And he doesn’t seem to think it is arthritis. though I’m going to get a second oppinion on that. i’ve been googling things all morning long. but I figured I’d put a ? out there and see if there is anyone that has had other reasons for their knees to be hurting so bad. Any ideas to throw at the doctor would beat not having any.
I also keep getting bladder and kidney infections for no apparent reason. To answer any ? about my lifestyle. I don’t drink, smoke, no drugs other than my prescriptions, I don’t even drink Soda anymore.
Maybe there is someone out there that has seen some of these problems before and may have some suggestions for me to talk to the doctors about. It’s real hard running around with 3 kids when I can’t walk.

  39. QUESTION:
What do I do about my crazy brother?
Hello! This is a bit of a long story but I’ll try to give some background info and try to keep it short.

I’m 23 years old and I’m a cancer survivor. I survived kidney cancer twice as a baby/toddler (9 months old the first time, and 3 years old the second time). My brother was born when I was two and a half, so unfortunately for him, I was diagnosed when he was an infant and my parent’s attention went from their new baby to their sick toddler. Anyway, growing up my doctors and parents ALWAYS kept a really close eye on me and I was always having check ups for how I was growing, kidney function, blood pressure, bone development, etc. Everything was good and fine until I was 14 years old when the rest of my kidneys failed. Luckily, I didn’t need to go on dialysis, but my doctors asked that I was brought in a bit more so that they could monitor my kidney function more closely. To make a long story short…I was given a new kidney at age 18 by a cadaver donor. I’ve had some minor health hiccups since then but I feel like I’m like any normal 23 year old. Anyway, a quick side note… being a childhood cancer survivor was not so bad because you get a lot of perks like going to a lot of events for sick kids where you and your family have a lot of fun and meet a lot of famous people.

Here’s when my brother comes into play: he’s 20 years old now and a few years ago he mentioned to me and my mom that it always hurt him that I got more attention than he did growing up. I think that when he first told me that, I had a hard time taking it in because they my parents had to pay more attention to me because I was sick. I also think that because I was an overachiever growing up and wanted to prove that I wasn’t my disease and he was a huge underachiever he got a lot of negative attention. Also, he got into pot and other drugs in high school and it continued on to today (my mom finds pipes and mushrooms and other stuff every few months in his dresser drawers. He’s gotten smarter though and only keeps pot in his drawer with his medical marijuana license).

Recently, he’s changed a whole lot and has gotten more aggressive. I can tell by the way that he talks to his friends that he wants to be the alpha male and talks down to everyone, including me. He always demands that I give him money and calls me a b*t*h or a f*****g wh**e if I don’t want to give him anything. Also, my parents left us home alone for a week while they went on vacation and he wanted to throw a house party. I told him no and he threw one anyway. To make a long story short, when I freaked out about having all of these underage kids drinking in our house with more kids trying to get in, he called me a crazy f*****g b*t*h to all of his friends and told them that I was just a psycho and to ignore me. At the end of the night, my car got vandalized by a bunch of drunk teenagers and the police came to break up the party.

Anyway, because my parents are starting to feel sorry for my brother because of all of his emotional problems, they told us that we were both to blame for the party getting out of hand. We fought constantly for a time period where he got really into name calling and stealing my stuff. He called me a lot of nice gems such as chubby as f**k (I gained weight after my kidney transplant), fat f*****g moon face, psycho b***h and other stuff like that. He also threatened to beat the sh*t out of me and tell the police it was self defense if my hair hit him or something like that. I did fight back some by calling him a drug addict and telling him he was a failure by flunking out of community college.

Anyway, that was last summer and it was pretty horrible. I attend university in England so I haven’t seen him since then but am going home tomorrow for Christmas and New Year. He told my mom that he was going to ignore me the whole time I’m home. My mom then gave me this lecture that it’s my job to fix this whole thing by being really nice to my brother. I’m so nervous about going home and resent him for resenting me about our childhood. He has said that this all has to do with me getting more attention because I was sick, but I couldn’t help that. My mom said that she and my dad made a lot of mistakes raising us and she had no idea how my brother felt all those years. I seriously cannot sympathize with him. I may be wrong in feeling so much resentment towards him as well, but I’m hoping someone can set me straight if I need to be more sympathetic because I’m really confused with what my mom is telling me.

  40. QUESTION:
PLEASE HELP! VET ADVICE DESPERATELY NEEDED!!!?
My 5 year old pembroke welsh corgi has been acting funny for the past 1-2 weeks. He started drinking incredible amounts of water and peeing frequently, he stopped eating (very rare of him), and he was very lethargic. We took him the vet last Friday and they said they were going to treat him as if he had a bladder infection. They put him on Clavamox twice a day for 7 days and then re-evaluate the situation. On Monday we still weren’t seeing results so we took him back to the vet. They did x-rays and blood tests. The x-rays showed up pretty normal, and they said his kidneys were functioning fine as well(we were afraid of kidney failuer) but they discovered he had a high amount of liver enzymes. We continued him on his medicine as well as a recommended “bland diet” (rice and chicken) and he seems to be getting somewhat better. He shows a slight increase in energy, he eats his “bland diet” in a heart beat, and has slowed down considerably on his water intake. We try to test him to see if he can eat anything else and it seems as if it is hurting his mouth to chew. i.e. he only eats one kibble at a time. As a test we threw him a tiny curnal of popcorn (his favorite food) and he caught it in his mouth, but spit it out. We are in the process, per directions from the vet, of collecting 3 consecutive daily urine samples to test for Cushing’s Disease. If it is not that then the vet said it could be an infection of the pancreas or liver. We are desperately hoping it is not Cushing’s Disease because we know the effects are not good. Can anyone with experience with Cushing’s Disease please tell me their own story and if you think my dog may be suffering from it.

    • ANSWER:
I wish I knew about Cushing’s Disease so I could help you. I’ll star your question and maybe one of my contacts will see it and can offer you some advice. Also, you might want to think about re-posting this question in the “Pets” section under “Dogs” in order to get some more feedback from dog owners or Vets. God bless you and your dear pet – I pray he will be allright!

  41. QUESTION:
Help! Microbiology case studies-don’t know where to even begin! I’m not a healthcare professional yet!?
I need either guidance on where to begin to research these topics or your diagnosis for 2 out of 3 of these case studies. Thanks in advance!

    Case 8

A 4-year old girl presents at the emergency room with bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. The child’s mother reports that the child has had these symptoms for about 24 hours and she has not passed any urine for about 12 hours.

The child is enrolled in a day care center and the group had recently made a field trip to a fast food place to learn about different jobs. The children had a lunch of ground beef, fries and cola after meeting with different workers. This field trip was 4 days earlier on Friday. The child had a temperature of 39C and showed physical signs of dehydration. Blood samples drawn showed evidence of greatly reduced kidney function and lysed red blood cells.

What is your diagnosis here? What is organism is responsible?
What pathogenic feature of this organism caused the severity of this problem?
What were the critical features to your diagnosis?

    Case 2

A 27-year old white female presented at the walking clinic of her local physician on August 15. On physical exam, the patient had a fever of 38.5C. She appeared fatigued, had tender joints, and complained of a headache, a stiff neck and a backache. The physician noticed a circular “rash” about 5 inches in diameter, with a bright red leading edge and a dim center in the form of a “bull’s eye”. The physician noted an irregular heart beat. The patient complained of lack of ability to concentrate.

The patient gave the following history: She is a graduate student in the wildlife program at the university in town. She was in the field for three weeks in Wisconsin during the months of May and June. She tracks small mammals in the field and studies their behavior. It had been a warm, wet spring and she complained of a large number of biting flies, mosquitoes and ticks in the area. She felt well until about 2 weeks after returning to her home. Since that time, many of her symptoms had progressed. She finally found that she could take it no more.

What is your best diagnosis of this case?
What features are critical to your diagnosis?
What further steps should be taken to clear up the problem?

    Case 5

A 22-year old male college student was presented at the ESU health clinic. He looked tired and pale. He presented because of high fever and chest pain. He was afraid he was having a heart attack (bad week of exams). He was examined immediately by the PA and an EKG strip was run. He had no evidence of acute heart problems. The attending physician visited the patient. He obtained the following history from the past 36 hours. The patient had a tight cough. He had significant muscle aches and pains. He had a bad headache and had had fevers of 101-103F.

The physician ordered a chest x-ray. It did not show any significant consolidated inflammation suggestive of pneumonia. The patient showed significant nasal drainage and a moderately tight, but productive cough on physical exam. He had a fever of 101F and generally inflamed mucous membranes. A rapid Strep test showed no evidence of Streptococcal infection and his tonsils and adenoids had been removed.

What is the most likely diagnosis for this patient? On what do you base this diagnosis?
What secondary infection problems should be monitored?
What is the preferred treatment for this disease?

    • ANSWER:
      Case 8.

Classic presentation for E coli is short for Escherichia coli — a bacteria (germ) that causes severe cramps and diarrhea. E. coli is a leading cause of bloody diarrhea. The hamburger meal is a give-a-way for e coli.

  42. QUESTION:
What is wrong with my heart?
Tonight I went to the ER for right lower back pain and severe bloating, gas and discomfort.
While I was there my heart started to act up (it does this from time to time). First I noticed I could see my heartbeat in my eyes then I noticed my shirt would move with every beat. My BP was normal at 137/72. They did a number of blood tests and an ultrasound on my kidney and gall bladder. Everything came back normal including my troponin lvls. While I was lying in bed watching the monitor I kept noticing it say SV Rythym, it would last for a bit then go back to Sinus Rythym.
I also noticed I was having lots of pvc’s (single, pair and multiform). One time the monitor said VTach. Also while I was watching tv in the room, the monitor started beeping really loud almost like an alarm. The monitor read *RR*. After about 10 seconds it went away. I have no idea what RR is. The ER doc said that pvcs arent serious and I should tell my doc about the VTach episode.
It also kept reading, “cannot analyze ST” I have no idea what that means. I am a 30 yr old white male. I am on a diet called the “Take Shape For Life” diet with medifast meals. It’s basically a low carb. low calorie, high protein diet for my obesity. I also just started Lexapro 2 days ago. Could the Lexapro or diet be causing the arrythmias? My cardiologist has done an echo, a nuclear stress test,
ekg’s, and even a cardiac cath. He said I have a mild case of Mitral Valve Prolapse, a little fluid in my
heart, and pvc’s but the cath showed a structurally normal heart with no coronary artery disease.
Should I be worried about all the things that showed up on my cardiac monitor tonight or let them go since I’ve already had plenty of tests that were negative??? What is an SV Rythym? Why did my monitor alarm go off saying *RR*? Any other info on all this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for your time and reply.

    • ANSWER:
Most significant is the alarm for RR.

To get a clearer picture, they listed the time from one heartbeat’s R-wave to the next R-wave (called RR intervals) and synchronized these lists to the time of the PVC beat and averaged the values in the list. A plot of this averaged RR interval list (called a PVC tachogram) not only confirmed their observation that heart rate sped up for a few beats after a PVC, but highlighted another less obvious feature, that heart rate then slows down beyond what it was before the PVC, before returning to the original heart rate.

      This is not good.

  43. QUESTION:
What causes massive muscle weakness? ?
I can barely type this msg, my hands are so weak. I walk at a snails pace. My heart keeps skipping beats on me. I’m 26 male, 6’2, 200lbs. I’ve lost about 15 pounds. I ‘ve always been 215-225 lbs, use to do cardio everyday, now after going for a run, i feel as if i’m dying, and my heart will skip beats on me about 20 times for a few hours after a workout. My throat is bothering me, no pain or anything, just feel like it’s about to swell up, but never does.

my doctor checked, my liver, kidneys, blood sugar, arthritis, parasites, lyme disease, hiv, std’s, thyroid, blood count.

only thing that showed up is an allergy to gluten. as well as I keep getting infections. Sinuses clogged, a big puss bubble, a intestinal bacteria, all treated with moxicillan and 500mg ciprofloxacin.

my heart beat is so weak right now. Should I head to the hospital? Do they take major muscle weakness seriously? feels like i won’t last much longer. i haven’t taken a proper bowel movement for a few days now, my digestive system doesn’t move, i keep peeing, i wake up dehydrated every morning. when I wake up it take me like 10 minutes to even get out of bed, because my mind keeps wandering off on me.

  44. QUESTION:
I have adult anorexia…I have questions.?
First, I am asking this question in all sincerity…being completely honest…and, I appreciate anyone who can answer my questions!
I have had what I call “cyclic” anorexia eversince I was a teen. I am 53 years young now.
I relapsed almost 3 years ago.
Typically, I was able to regain my health & stopped my self starvation in the past. I have had treatment before, but I never had to go in the hospital.
But, this time, I do not want to stop my obsessive illness, but I don’t understand why?
I am not suicidal. I do not have a death wish!
    I want to live.
But, I don’t want to lose my best friend…anorexia.
I like the control I have with it…
I like the numb feeling I get from not eating.
(I am sorry if this disturbs anyone?)
And, naturally I have an extreme fear of gaining weight again.
I have been to a talk therapy psychologist. I have been to a psychiatrist.
My family doctor has tried to work with me.
I have 3 grown kids & 2 grandchildren, but I find myself completely stuck in this mental illness.
(In case you did not know, anorexia IS the #1 most deadly mental illness)
By the way, I stopped losing weight a year ago on 500-800 cal’s a day…so, losing weight is obviously not my main priority from my illness. I wish I could lose more weight, but my body stopped at what they call a plateau to protect itself.

I actually like this addiction as a way to handle my stress & anxiety?
I have been on a number of med’s for my anorexia, but I don’t want to take the ones that cause me NOT to obsess about what I eat?

I remember how it started almost 3 years ago, and those problems are still unresolved.

I am a praying woman. I fear death. So, I know there is hope!
I do not appear anorexic now that I am older to most people…they just think I am not getting enough sleep.

Does anyone have any much needed advice for me?
Is it possible that I won’t die from anorexia complications if I eat at least 800 cal’s daily for the rest of my life?
I have lots of degenerative disease going on due to my malnutrition…degenerated retina’s, degenerative disc disease, and several others, but nothing life threatening yet like kidney failure.
My main worry is my heart!
Can a middle aged woman keep a healthy heart on 500-800 cal’s a day?
Can my heart endure it & continue beating since I can no longer exercise obsessively like when I was younger? I know my heart muscle can be affected…

If you need to know – my daily food intake is 2 slimfast drinks, sweet tea, a stalk of celery, a cup of dry cheerios w/o milk, coffee with cream, & lots of bubble gum.
In response to the 2nd answer here on the colon cleanse – I am not allowed to take laxatives or water pills. I DID successfully stop that habit because it causes electrolyte imbalance which can cause heart failure among other things…I assume colon cleanse may have a laxative effect?
To the person who answered first – I am so sorry to hear about your cardiac arrest. That is so sad & scary. I pray you will live a happy & healthy life!
I just wonder if it was because you were exercising to extreme & using what cal’s you did eat on your physical activity?
I used to do that. I don’t anymore.
I did have a nuclear scan show heart probs, but the cardiac catheter did not figure out an actual specific problem?
I guess with me not exercising this time around…I am at least retaining the cal’s/energy for my bodies health?
    I don’t know. I am asking…

    • ANSWER:

you might need to be on a prescribed medication like
      lipitor or vytorin.
I’m surprised your doctor hasn’t mentioned the amount of beer you drink daily, that can affect your liver function and cause your alt to rise.
if you only drink beer for the flavor or to be sociable try drinking the non alcoholic beer which will not have the affect on your liver

  47. QUESTION:
    Need Help quick,….Please.?
My grand mother has been sick for the last five months,
About five months ago, she suddenly started vomiting every thing she ate,My parent took her to the doctor, She had a C.T. scan, then ultrasound, then a course of medicines. She was a little better for two to three days but then again started vomiting. Mum ‘n Dad took her to the best hospital available, they suggested endoscopy. The result of endoscopy was that she had inflammations near the duodenum and the inflammations can be malignant, but after the biopsy was taken and tested, the doctors confirmed that the polyps were not malignant. The disease was recognized as Gastritis. She was given certain medications and started to get better, later three to four days, she again started to vomit,…the whole procedure of endoscopy and biopsy was repeated from a different hospital, but the result was same….no improvement was seen but she started to get worse…
Doctors say that her oesophagus is completely clear but whatever she eats, gets stuck int the oesophagus and she cant breath well too, Usually solid food is much easier to eat but liquids get so badly stuck somewhere in the oesophagus that she Starts beating her chest,..Due to less water and liquid intake, she is now starting to have kidney pain.
Please help me, Me and my whole family is so much worried, . I’ve written a long story but I only wanted to write all that could help…
I have the names of all the medicines she has taken till now, and also the reports of doctors.
And if you can help, Then do be quick, cuz time won’t stop! someone needs to do something quick!
Her age is over sixty five. She used so smoke a little but it has been over seven years that she hasn’t. Symptoms other that vomiting are just stomach pain, and a slight nausea once in two about days, but nausea is not continuous.
Her total diet per day is about two to three table spoons of tea, half a cup of water, A quarter of a piece of bread, and a little something else,,
She gets fever now and then,
She has’nt been sick that much before, but she didnt get anything more than a slight fever.
She had constipation a few days back and also had problem in urine, but that settled quite easily.

    • ANSWER:
Does she has other symptoms other than vomit? Age, what type of foods, fever, headache, pain, fatigue, loss of weight, loss of appetite, nausea before vomit, or just vomit without nausea, history of previous disease, constipation, diarrhea, anemia, smoking, alcohol drinks, history of previous surgery. etc. Details like that would be needed.

If she lack of water she need to be hospitalized to maintain / prevent dehydration, further less water intake would lead to kidney problem or even kidney failure. Her kidney should be protected at all cost.

  48. QUESTION:
Could I be an anemic? or hypoglycemic?
Could I be an anemic? or hypoglycemic?
For about a year and a half now I’ve constantly been very sick. I’m a teenager and I’ve had many previous heath issues (all my life). I’ve had a heart murmur and I have old mono (aka epstein barr). Because of these two illnesses, ive always had a fast heartbeat, fatigue, and dizziness.

However, since i’ve reached puberty it’s only gotten worse. I have many symptoms of what i think is anemia but im not entirely sure. I am constantly sick (and it comes out of nowhere. at one minute im fine and the next, i cant even stand i feel so sick and dizzy). Im EXTREMELY pale (or at another extreme where my face will turn beat red, from no activity at all). I get dizzy all the time. I see dark spots in front of my eyes. Other times I’ll feel overheated and sick (out of nowhere) and my entire eyesight will go black and I’ll feel like im about to faint. (this happened to me so bad that once some woman thought i was blind, because i completely blacked out). Sometimes just standing up makes me feel nauseous. I have a very hard time remembering things (im not sure if thats a sign of anything, but i figured id throw it in anyway). I could go an entire day without eating, because im rarely hungry (and sometimes ill have the extreme where out of nowhere ill feel famished to the point where i must eat or i think ill faint). I can hear my heart pounding in my chest. I have bad headaches. and I CONSTANTLY have terrible back aches, sometimes to the point where i cant even stand up. My period is usually late and very heavy too.
Im a fairly small person. Im not over or underweight. Ive always been underweight my entire life (not by choice, just because i cant gain weight), but recently, since ive been experiencing health problems i tried to eat better so now im the exact weight i should be for my height.
    I dont have diabetes.
I tried to ignore these symptoms but they are Really affecting my life now. I dont know if they are just symptoms of the diseases I already have had diagnosed, or something different entirely. I really dont want to see my doctor, because shes not nice at all. But i think im gonna have to.
Does anyone have any idea what this is?

    Additional Details
PS im not a vegetarian or vegan…

AND sorry this is so long!

    >>10 pts<<
i also have kidney problems. (dont know if that matters, but watever.)

    • ANSWER:
We can’t see you, examine you or run any tests.
I think you will have to see your doctor. If you don’t like/trust her why not change doctors? Or ask for a second opinion.
I have a heart mmurmur- congenital – but it hasn’t affected my life.

You need to make an effort to eat regularly, even if it’s something light like scrambled egg or baked beans on toast and followed with fruit or an ice cream. We all feel dizzy and faint when we lack food.

You sound very stressed and anxious, this could account for many of your symptoms. The same symptoms could be caused by an underlying condition that needs diagnosing and treating. Instead of guessing and worrying please make a decision about seeing your doctor – or a different doctor.
Stress predisposes to illness and worrying = stress.
